When one thinks of performing arts in Sullivan County, the first name that comes to mind is Sullivan Performing Arts (SPA). For over 40 years, Sullivan Performing Arts (formerly known as, Sullivan County Arts Council) has been the premier performing arts organization in the county, providing audiences with a varied schedule of artistic performances, featuring performers from near and far. Whether the SPA stage is graced by artists of international fame or those yet-to-be famous, there is always a commitment to quality entertainment.

Sullivan Performing Arts is the premier performing arts organization in the region. As we enter our twenty-ninth year, we continue to be committed to bringing the performing arts to a wide cross section of the population of Sullivan and her neighboring counties. Our performances have included classical ballet, modern and folk dance, drama, musical theater, popular, folk, and classical music. In addition to our adult performances, we provide a summer series of entertainment geared towards the whole family. We strive to educate as well as entertain and choose our performers to appeal to as many different segments of our population as possible.

In our endeavors to address the cultural interests and needs of our community, we have worked in partnership with several other institutions and organizations including: Sullivan County Community College, the Student Affairs Office of SCCC, the Elder Hostel Program of SCCC, the Liberty Museum and Arts Center, Public Radio Station WJFF and the various member organizations of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance. We have served as an initial venue for several endeavors that have grown into independent entities including the Weekend of Chamber Music and the Shandelee Music Festival.

Sullivan Performing Arts is dedicated to the revitalization of the Catskills region. Towards that end we have purchased and are in the process of renovating the Academy Theater in Liberty, NY. This site has recently been listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. This project for which we have employed the services of volunteers is the primary focus of our present work. We plan to make this our home for many of our upcoming performances, as well as make it available to others in the county who are seeking a venue for performances.
